    […] None of this is recorded in known historical sources, but is quite plausible for several reasons. First of all, the Saint Laurentius church of Ename was built by emperor Otto III as a coronation church to show the power of the Ottonian dynasty to the aggressive Baldwin IV. Secondly, Saint Laurentius was not only the preferred saint of the Ottonian dynasty (as Otto I had become emperor thanks to his victory at Lechfeld on Saint Laurentius day) but also the preferred saint of Henry II (the legend tells that Saint Laurentius intervened at the death of Henry II to let him go to heaven). His wife Cunegunde was also coronated as Frankish queen on Saint Laurentius day in 1002. Before leaving for Ghent and Ename, Henry II had a Saint Laurentius altar consecrated in the Bamberg cathedral by the pope (see list above). Henri II also considered Saint Laurentius to be one of his victory saints. […]
